i'm teaching a FORM class at tyi. FORM is a "form" of pilates exercised while meditating on the 23rd Psalm. this means that i can spend part of my day practicing FORM and Pilates in my office. it breaks up the usual pattern of the day and keeps my mind fresh.
we were talking a while back about memorizing scripture in our small group and if it was something that should be focused on. everyone else said "not so much" and "why make it a requirement?" i was the only advocate among our postmodern friends. i think scripture, when studied and even when memorized, provides us with a useful weapon against the things that pop up in our lives that cause us to stumble. the more you study scripture, the more it forms around your belief system. it becomes a part of you.
when you are confused, "Lord, you have searched me, and you know me." ps 139:1
when you are broken, "he restores my soul." ps 23:2 b
when you are afraid, "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; and you are mine." Is 43:1
when you are lost, "Remain in me and I will remain in you." John 15:4
when you have wandered astray, " 'Even now,' declares the Lord, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.' " Joel 2:12
when you have doubt, "Look at the nations and watch--and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told." Habakkuk 1:5
when letting go, "For everything there is a season... a time to keep and a time to throw away." Eccl 3:1 & 6b
when longing, "..the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt 4:17
Yes, scripture plays such an important role for our formation as Christians. How would you describe the Bible? Is it an instruction book? A book of law? A book of stories? What your answer is may tell you a lot about the role truth plays in your own life.

I think whatever words I would use to describe the bible lessen it because it encompasses so much more than I often comprehend.
