Jason found a short cut that bypasses the interstates but takes us through what i call the "deserted downtown." we pass through sidestreets that border the railroad tracks and abandoned warehouses. there's a lighthouse-looking tower where people seem to be living as all the windows have curtains and an array of potted plants occupying the space. it is very much an urban setting. you can see the skyline as you drive toward the city and there is an endless array of cars zooming by on streets along the other side of the tracks.

so i was driving to work today and sitting at a red light on one of these urban backstreets when i saw something move from the corner of my right eye. i looked into the field next to me into what appeared to be a backyard of an old mill. there in the field, i saw four goats eating the yellowed grass that stood about a foot and a half high. they were no more than a yard away from the edge of the street, the only thing separating me from them was a rickety fence atop a low stone wall. and i thought,

"goats?! in the city?"

I am on a journey, searching for God and what that means in my daily life. It's not about constraints, it's not about limitations, but freedom. I know something exists beyond the visible. I live thinking about possibilities and what could be and the necessary steps to make things happen. I like long talks with a good friend, drinking tea, eating breakfast with my husband, going to a bookstore (they are the new libraries), cool mornings, windy days in the fall, learning about love and life from those who seem to have found their way, teenagers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, long baths, and connecting with another heart. I am learning how to love, how to live, when to speak and when not to, when it's time to gather the stones, when it's time to let go, surrender, forgiveness, and discipline.
