What if love was free and available to all? What if love came without conditions? What if love was something you didn’t have to work for? What if it was something that you could count on; being there no matter what?
Well, it is. Yet, somehow we have gotten away from truly relaying this love to our culture. We have become so incredibly cool and relevant and increasingly less spiritual, that people are left knowing that something inside of them exists that they can’t explain. And we, the church, who should be the authority on the soul, has left them with more questions than answers. We have turned this love into a political stance and a condescension that people who might have been open to hearing who Jesus was have now written the church off entirely. So what is our response?
Our response is to love. For so many years I have heard the phrase: You must love them, but you don’t have to like them. I don't know about you, but I don’t love anybody who I don’t like. If I am not first making the effort to like them as individuals, how is Christ going to work through me teaching me to love? I must learn compassion for those who consistently grate on my nerves and press all the right buttons.
Because truthfully, sometimes even I don't believe all of those statements about love with which I began this post. Sometimes I hear that small voice asking: Can it really be true?
